Where to Stay in Jackson Hole with Kids: Hotel Terra vs. The Cloudveil — An Honest Comparison

Where to Stay in Jackson Hole with Kids: Hotel Terra vs. The Cloudveil — An Honest Comparison

Choosing where to stay in Jackson Hole with kids? We stayed at both Hotel Terra in Teton Village and The Cloudveil in downtown Jackson on the same trip. Here's our honest side-by-side comparison to help you decide which is right for your family.
One of the first and most important decisions you’ll make when planning a Jackson Hole family trip is where to base yourself. And it’s not a simple one — because Jackson Hole has two very distinct home bases that offer completely different experiences.

There’s Teton Village, at the base of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, where you’re steps from the ski lifts, surrounded by mountain energy, and about 20 minutes from downtown Jackson. And there’s downtown Jackson, where you’re in the heart of the town, steps from Town Square, restaurants, shops, and all the western character that makes Jackson feel like Jackson.

On our April trip, we did both. Four nights at Hotel Terra in Teton Village, followed by one night at The Cloudveil in downtown Jackson. We experienced each property through the lens of traveling with our two young daughters, and the differences were significant enough that I think every family planning a Jackson Hole trip should read this before they book.

The Two Home Bases: Understanding the Geography First
Before comparing the hotels, it helps to understand what each location offers.

Teton Village is about a 20-minute drive from downtown Jackson. It sits at the base of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and is surrounded by ski infrastructure, a handful of restaurants, shops, and resort properties. During ski season it buzzes with energy. In shoulder season like April, it quiets down considerably — some restaurants reduce hours or close, and the village has a more peaceful, unhurried feel. Grand Teton National Park is approximately 1 mile away.

Downtown Jackson is the town itself — walkable, western, and full of life. Town Square anchors it with the famous antler arches, surrounded by restaurants, boutiques, galleries, and bars. Everything is accessible on foot. It’s 20 minutes from the ski resort and about 10 minutes from the southern entrance to Grand Teton National Park.

Neither location is wrong. The right choice depends entirely on what your family plans to spend most of your time doing.
Hotel Terra — Teton Village

The Location
Hotel Terra is located in the heart of Teton Village, just one mile from Grand Teton National Park. For skiing families, this proximity to the lifts is the headline feature. The Four Seasons is the closest hotel to the actual ski lifts in Teton Village, followed by Caldera House. Hotel Terra is approximately a 5-minute walk from the lifts — very manageable, though walking in ski boots with young children before the mountain opens does get tiring.
For our family, the Teton Village base made perfect sense for the ski-focused days of our trip. We could drop our younger daughter at the Kid’s Ranch for her lesson, ski ourselves, and return easily without a car in the mix.
Four nights at Hotel Terra Jackson Hole in Teton Village and this one bedroom suite was everything a family needs. Full kitchen, dining and living area with a queen Murphy bed. A proper king bedroom. Two bathrooms. Ski valet downstairs. Jackson Hole Mountain Resort five minutes away. If you are traveling with kids and want to be at the mountain without sacrificing space or comfort — this is the suite.

The Rooms
We stayed in a one-bedroom suite and the layout was excellent for a family of four. King bed and full bath in the bedroom, a queen Murphy bed in the living and dining room, a second guest bathroom with shower, and a full kitchen. The balcony had mountain views that we genuinely loved.
Hotel Terra offers a range of room types from Urban Studios at approximately 570 square feet with full kitchens and patios, to One-Bedroom Suites at approximately 782 square feet ideal for couples or small families, up to larger suites over 1,000 square feet. For families, the suite configurations with full kitchens are the practical choice.
The full kitchen was a significant budget advantage. We cooked several lunch and dinners during our stay rather than eating out, which matters when you’re in a destination where restaurant bills add up quickly. The layout also gave us plenty of room for ski gear, boots, coats, and everything else a family accumulates during an active trip. That might sound minor but when you’re gearing up every morning for skiing, having a proper entryway and space to organize makes the day start better.
The Amenities
Hotel Terra has a heated outdoor infinity pool overlooking the mountains, with lounge chairs where guests can relax while enjoying views of Teton Village Commons and the Snake River Mountain Range. There is also a rooftop spa, fitness center, two on-site restaurants — Osteria Café for casual daytime dining and Il Villaggio Osteria for Italian dinner — and a ski valet service.
Hotel Terra opened in 2007 as the first and still only LEED certified luxury hotel in Jackson Hole. If sustainability matters to your family when choosing where to stay, this is worth knowing.
The hotel terrace has a playground, which was a bonus for our kids. During ski season there is an ice skating rink in the courtyard — it had just closed when we arrived in early April.

The details that made Hotel Terra Jackson Hole feel like more than just a place to sleep. A warm welcoming lobby to start the morning. A mountain facing balcony with Teton Village courtyard views that we didn't want to leave. And an outdoor heated pool that the kids asked about every single day.

The Important Seasonal Note
This caught us off guard the day before checkout: Hotel Terra closes completely for several weeks after ski season ends and again in October before reopening for winter. If you are traveling in the shoulder season transition weeks — late April or early November — confirm the property is open before you book.
Honest Assessment
Hotel Terra is a solid, well-located choice for skiing families. The full kitchen suites are genuinely practical and the mountain proximity is unmatched for non-Four Seasons budgets. It is not the most glamorous property in Teton Village — the Four Seasons holds that title decisively — but it still delivers stylish comfort, convenience, and views that make it a worthwhile base for a ski trip with kids.
Best for: Families whose primary focus is skiing at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Families who want to self-cater to manage food costs. Families who want to be close to Grand Teton National Park.
The lobby is everything a mountain boutique hotel should look like — spacious, warm, modern mountain chic with ample seating that made it feel more like a living room than a hotel entrance. And an outdoor heated pool and hot tub so inviting we wished we had booked more than one night.

The Cloudveil — Downtown Jackson

Address: 112 Center Street, Jackson, WY 83001 Website: thecloudveil.com

The Location
The Cloudveil is the only hotel located directly on Jackson Hole’s Town Square. That one sentence tells you almost everything you need to know about why families love staying here. You walk out the front door and you are immediately in the middle of everything — the antler arches, the restaurants, the shops, Cowboy Coffee, Teton Toys, the candy store, the steakhouse. No car needed. No logistics. Just walk out and go.
The Cloudveil is part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, which means Marriott Bonvoy members can earn and redeem points — worth noting if you have status or points to use.
The Rooms
The Cloudveil’s guest rooms and suites are adorned with custom wood and leather furnishings, a fireplace, and mountain-inspired artwork by local artists. The rooms are beautifully designed with warm, western character that feels elevated without being stuffy. Comfortable beds, spacious shower, and good pressure — exactly what you want after a full day of exploring.
Note that standard guest rooms at The Cloudveil do not include a kitchen, unlike Hotel Terra’s suites. For families planning to self-cater, this is a meaningful difference. The Cloudveil works best as a shorter stay base — our one night there was perfect — where the convenience of location compensates for the lack of kitchen facilities.
The Cloudveil Jackson Hole — the only hotel directly on Jackson Town Square. Snack and beverage amenities on every floor included with the resort fee meant nobody was asking for anything the moment we walked through the door. The two queen room had a corner nook that became the kids unofficial headquarters when we were in the room.

The Amenities
The Cloudveil offers an outdoor heated pool and hot tub, a fitness center, complimentary Wi-Fi, and The Bistro restaurant serving French cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
The Cloudveil also offers complimentary hotel car service for rides within 2 miles of town and a complimentary shuttle running throughout the day to Teton Village for skiers (during the winter season). It is also closer to Snow King if you are headed there during the trip.
The daily Happy Hour at The Bistro — 3pm to 5pm, all drinks half off — was a pleasant surprise.
Present your Cloudveil room key for free admission to the National Museum of Wildlife Art any day of the week, and peruse galleries featuring more than 550 artists and over 5,000 cataloged items of animal art. The museum is the nation’s only one solely dedicated to wildlife art, and it overlooks the National Elk Refuge. Open Tuesday through Sunday, 10am to 5pm.
The Town Square Experience
There are antler arches at all four corners of Town Square — not just one. This means shorter waits for photos and more opportunity to experience this Jackson Hole icon without the crowd crush. Walking the square with the kids, stopping into shops, getting ice cream, wandering into Teton Toys — all of it was effortless because everything was literally outside our hotel door.
Honest Assessment
The Cloudveil is the more polished, design-forward property. The location is unbeatable for families who want to explore downtown Jackson without a car. The trade-off is no kitchen and higher nightly rates that may not come with the same practical value for multi-night stays as Hotel Terra’s kitchen suites. But as a one or two night downtown experience — especially paired with a longer ski base in Teton Village — it is wonderful.
Best for: Families who want to explore downtown Jackson on foot. A night or two at the start or end of a trip to experience town life. Families with Marriott Bonvoy points or American Express Platinum benefits.
Side-by-Side Comparison

Our Recommendation for Families
If your Jackson Hole trip revolves around skiing, base yourself at Hotel Terra in Teton Village for the bulk of your stay. The slopeside location, full kitchen suites, and mountain proximity make it the practical choice for ski-focused families.

If you have the flexibility to split your stay, spend the start or end of your trip at The Cloudveil downtown. It rounds out the Jackson Hole experience in a way that staying in Teton Village alone cannot.  That is exactly what we did, and it gave our trip a completeness that we really appreciated.
