Is a Jackson Hole Wildlife Safari Worth It? Our Honest Review with Kids

Wondering if a Jackson Hole wildlife safari is worth the cost with kids? We took a private full-day tour with Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris in April and here's our completely honest review β€” what we saw, what it cost, what surprised us, and whether we'd do it again.
Let me give you the short answer first: yes. A wildlife safari in Jackson Hole is absolutely worth it, especially when you’re traveling with young children. Now let me give you the long answer β€” because the details matter when you’re deciding how to spend what is not an insignificant amount of money.

We booked a private full-day Grand Teton wildlife safari withΒ Jackson Hole Wildlife SafarisΒ during our April trip to Jackson Hole with our two young daughters. Here is everything you need to know before you book.

Why We Decided to Book a Wildlife Safari
Grand Teton National Park covers more than 300,000 acres. That is an enormous amount of land, and if you’re driving through it for the first time without local knowledge, you can easily spend an entire day in a car and miss the wildlife entirely β€” not because it isn’t there, but because you don’t know where to look, or when.
We had young kids, limited time, and a genuine desire to actually see wildlife rather than just drive past beautiful scenery and hope for the best. A guided safari felt like the right investment.
Jackson Hole is one of the most wildlife-rich regions in North America. Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris is a local, family-owned and operated safari company offering wildlife experiences in Jackson Hole, Grand Teton, and Yellowstone National Parks. Their guides have years of experience and firsthand knowledge of the area, and that knowledge β€” knowing where animals will be at what time of day β€” is exactly what you’re paying for.
About Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris
Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris offers half-day and full-day Grand Teton wildlife safaris, full-day Yellowstone tours, and photography tours led by professional naturalist guides. They are a guide-owned and operated business, which means the people leading your tour are deeply invested in the quality of the experience.
Their vehicles are equipped with binoculars for every guest, a spotting scope, and a collection of natural history and wildlife books for use throughout the day. All trips include transportation, an experienced guide, drinks/snacks. Full-day trips also include lunch.

Panoramic Teton views from the safari vehicle, bighorn sheep at the National Elk Refuge in the afternoon, and a stop at Oxbow Bend β€” were some of the best wildlife viewing spots along our tour with Jackson Hole Wildlife Safari.

Your first three moments in Jackson Hole: landing inside Grand Teton National Park at JAC airport, driving wide open Wyoming roads with the Tetons in your rearview mirror, and walking under the famous antler arches on Jackson Town Square.

Choosing the Right Tour: Private vs. Group, Half-Day vs. Full-Day
This is the first decision you’ll need to make and it matters β€” especially if you’re traveling with young kids.
Private vs. Group:
The minimum age for group wildlife safaris is 8 years old. Private safaris have no age minimum. If you have children under 8, you are required to book a private tour. Additionally, a car seat is required for children under 8 and is not provided by the company β€” you will need to bring your own or arrange one in advance. We have two young daughters, so private was our only option, and our guide Barry was patient while we got the car seats set up at pickup. Honestly, I think the private tour makes for a better experience regardless of age. The guide sets the pace around your family, makes stops based on your interests, and takes bathroom breaks whenever you need them without disrupting other guests.
Half-Day vs. Full-Day:
The full-day private Grand Teton Wildlife Safari is priced at $1,095 for 1-2 guests, with $225 for each additional guest, plus taxes and fees. The group full-day safari is $305 per guest with a two-person minimum and a maximum of 6-8 guests, with a minimum age of 8.
For our family of 4 on a private tour, we paid approximately $1,250 before gratuity. That is a meaningful investment and I want to be transparent about it. For families on a tighter budget, the half-day option or a group tour (if your children are 8+) is a perfectly valid alternative. Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris also offers 3-hour tours for families who want a taste of the experience without committing to a full day.
Note: National Park entrance fees and guide gratuity are not included in the tour price. Budget for both.Β Β Check their website for any changes or up to date pricing.
Our Experience: What the Day Actually Looked Like
Our guide Barry picked us up at 7am at Hotel Terra in Teton Village. He was on time, patient while we set up car seats, and immediately created a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere for our family.

Breakfast included:Β Fresh muffins, orange juice, and water were waiting in the vehicle. Baskets of snacks were available throughout the day β€” our kids helped themselves freely and appreciated having something to eat during the drives between spots.

The vehicle:Β A spacious, comfortable private safari vehicle. Plenty of room for the whole family to spread out.

From the moment we left, Barry was scanning the landscape. He is exceptional at spotting wildlife β€” something that sounds simple but is genuinely a skill that takes years of field experience to develop. Animals that would have been invisible to us from the road became clear the moment he pointed them out and set up his spotting scope.

What we saw in early April:
  • Elk β€” large herds in multiple locations
  • White-tailed deer and mule deer
  • A moose
  • Bison
  • Coyote
  • Bighorn sheep β€” two separate groups
  • Bald eagles and various other birds
  • A grizzly bear deep in the dark timber
That last sighting was something we will not forget. Barry knew I particularly wanted to see a bear. He took us to the areas he knew grizzlies typically frequented at that time of year, and we were able to spot one. It was distant β€” in dark timber β€” but through his spotting scope it was unmistakable. He set up the scope every single time we encountered wildlife, no matter how brief the stop. That commitment to making sure we actually saw what we were looking at, rather than just being told something was out there, made an enormous difference.

The road situation in early April:Β Some inner roads of Grand Teton National Park were still closed to vehicles during our early April visit. This did not impact our tour in any noticeable way. Barry navigated alternative routes including Kelly and Mormon Row, and he clearly knew exactly where the wildlife would be regardless of which roads were accessible. If you’re visiting in early April, don’t let the road closures discourage you from booking β€” an experienced guide will work around them seamlessly.

Lunch at the Silver Dollar Bar & Grill

One of the unexpected highlights of our entire trip was where Barry took us for lunch:Β The Silver Dollar Bar & GrillΒ inside the historic Wort Hotel, located one block from Town Square in downtown Jackson.

The Silver Dollar Bar & Grill has been a cornerstone of the Jackson Hole community since 1950. Located inside the historic Wort Hotel in downtown Jackson, just steps from Town Square, it offers Western-inspired cuisine, handcrafted cocktails, and live music four nights a week.
The bar’s name comes from its famous serpentine bar which is inlaid with 2,032 uncirculated 1921 silver dollars from the Denver mint. It is a genuine piece of Jackson Hole history and not the kind of place most first-time visitors would stumble upon on their own.
We loved the chili and the French dip. Kids menu is available. The food was well-priced for Jackson Hole, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and it felt like a local institution β€” because it is. The tour price covers lunch but does not include alcohol. This is one of those moments where having a guide adds value beyond wildlife spotting. We would never have found this place on our own, and it became one of our memorable meals of the entire trip.
Moose. Grizzly bear. Elk. Bighorn sheep. These are just some of the wildlife sightings we were lucky to experience. April is one of the best months for wildlife viewing in the valley. Bears are emerging from hibernation. Elk herds are active. And with virtually no crowds on the roads.

What Impressed Us Most: The Little Things

Bathroom logistics.Β This sounds unglamorous but it matters enormously when you’re traveling with young children. Barry knew exactly where every restroom was located throughout the park and checked in regularly about whether anyone needed a break. We never had to scramble. That knowledge saved us significant time and stress throughout the day.

The spotting scope.Β Every single wildlife sighting β€” no matter how distant β€” was followed by Barry setting up his scope so we could get a proper, close look. He never pointed at something and moved on. He made sure we saw it and weren’t rushed.

Customization.Β Barry shaped the day around our interests. When I mentioned wanting to see a bear, he adjusted the route accordingly. When the kids needed a slower pace, he provided it. Guides tailor each safari to the interests and needs of their guests.Β

Knowledge beyond wildlife.Β Barry shared information about the ecology, geology, and history of the region throughout the day. The kids absorbed more than I expected. By the end of the day they were genuinely curious about the animals, their habitats, and the landscape around them. That kind of educational engagement is hard to manufacture and it happened naturally.

Honest Considerations Before You Book

The full day is long for little ones.Β Our tour was approximately 6 hours. That is a significant stretch for young children. Barry was attentive about keeping everyone comfortable, but I want to set realistic expectations. If your children are very young or have limited patience for long car trips, the 3-hour tour option may be a better fit for your family.

Car seat required for children under 8.Β The company does not provide car seats. You will need to bring your own. Factor this into your logistics β€” if you are renting a car, make sure you have your car seat with you on safari day. Barry was completely accommodating while we got ours installed at pickup, but it is something to plan for in advance.

The Yellowstone tour is even longer.Β Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris also offers full-day Yellowstone tours. I would not recommend this for families with very young children β€” it would be well over 6 hours and significantly more demanding. Grand Teton is the right call being based in Jackson, WY for young families.

Book in advance.Β Private tours especially fill up quickly, particularly during peak ski season and summer. We booked ours ahead of our April visit. Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris has a 48-hour cancellation policy for single-day safaris, with a full refund for cancellations made before the policy window. Always check their website for the most current cancellation terms.

Budget for gratuity.Β Our guide provided exceptional service. Budget generously for a tip β€” it is both warranted and expected.

National Park pass.Β Bring your America the Beautiful Annual Pass if you have one β€” it covers park entrance fees for Grand Teton National Park. Otherwise, you can purchase your national park pass there (which is what we did).Β Β If you are going during peak season, I would suggest purchasing this ahead of time to save time.Β Β

Because you are entering Grand Teton National Park in a commercial tour vehicle rather than a private car, the fee structure is different from what most people expect. The commercial tour entry fee for Grand Teton and Yellowstone is $20 per person for adults. Children 15 and under enter free. If you hold an America the Beautiful Annual Pass, bring it β€” your guide will present it at the gate and it covers the per-person fee for the passholder plus three additional adults. Children 15 and under are always free regardless. The America the Beautiful Annual Pass costs $80 and covers entrance to all national parks for a year, making it excellent value for families planning multiple park visits.
Snake River Overlook, Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming. The Snake River curves through the valley with the Teton Range rising behind it β€” one of the most photographed views in the American West for good reason. Our Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris guide knew every stop worth making. This was one of them.

Other Wildlife Safari Companies Worth Knowing
Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris was our choice and we’d book with them again without hesitation. That said, there are other reputable operators worth knowing about if you’re comparing options:

Jackson Hole Eco Tour AdventuresΒ jhecotouradventures.comΒ β€” An authorized concessioner and permittee of the National Park Service offering full and half-day tours in summer and winter, with multi-day expeditions available year-round.Β

They also require a private tour for children under 10 years of age. Their full-day tours include pickup, optics, breakfast, snacks, and lunch at a park lodge or restaurant.

Backcountry SafarisΒ https://backcountrysafarisjh.comΒ β€” Offers wildlife safaris led by wildlife biologists, with both group and private options for Grand Teton and Yellowstone.

Wildlife Expeditions by Teton Science SchoolsΒ https://www.tetonscience.org/wildlife-expeditions/Β β€” A respected operator with naturalist guides and a focus on education, excellent for families who want a deeper scientific context for what they’re seeing.

When comparing companies, pay attention to: guide qualifications, group size limits, what is included in the price, age minimums for group tours, and vehicle type. All of these factors affect the experience significantly.
Is It Worth the Money?
For our family: unequivocally yes.
We saw a grizzly bear, two groups of bighorn sheep, a moose, bison herds, elk everywhere, and a dozen other species we would have driven right past on our own. We had lunch at a Jackson Hole institution we never would have discovered. Our kids left the park more curious about wildlife and nature than they arrived. And we did all of it without stress, without scrambling to find bathrooms, and without spending half the day wondering if we were even looking in the right places.
Grand Teton National Park is enormous and beautiful. But knowing where to be and when to be there is the difference between a good day and an extraordinary one. That is what an experienced guide provides.
If budget is a concern, the half-day group tour is a meaningful compromise. But if you’re already investing in flights, accommodation, and lift tickets for a Jackson Hole trip, adding a wildlife safari to your itinerary is one of the decisions you will not regret.
