Family Getaway to Aspen in the Summer

One of our favorite activities was just walking around downtown Aspen, so much for the kids to see and explore.

Aspen is the perfect family friendly travel destination any time of the year. Aspen is a fun getaway with kids of all ages and four-legged family members. Walking around Aspen, you’ll see so many places welcoming dogs, it is so pet-friendly. If you are looking for a place to travel with your kids and dogs, then look no further than Aspen.
The weather is beautiful year round and really is a place that shows the changes in season. In the summer, it doesn’t get too hot because of the gentle mountain breeze. In the winter, you get beautiful blankets of snow. If you are an intermediate to advanced skier, Aspen is a breathtaking place to ski.
The views are those of a postcard, perfectly stunning boasting vibrant green scenery in the summer and snow covered streets and white capped breathtaking peaks in the winter. You really have to see it for yourself and experience all there is to do outdoors.
To get to Aspen, we fly from LAX on a direct flight. It’s roughly 2 hours and 20 minutes. Do keep in mind the elevation, as me and Whitney tend to get altitude sickness. Having learned this on a previous mountain trip, we came prepared with our Zofran pills (anti-nausea medication).

Tip: If you or anyone you’re traveling with tends to get motion sickness or altitude sickness, make sure to prepare for the symptoms from the high altitude.

Aspen airport is really small so it was really simple to navigate through. As we landed, we called Hotel Jerome to utilize their complimentary shuttle service. Since the hotel was just 10 minutes away, we didn’t have to wait long. A driver arrived in a large SUV to pick us up and take us to check-in. We’ve stayed at the Hotel Jerome, Auberge Resorts Collection, in Aspen quite a few times already. The accommodations are always so memorable for its blend of modern luxury and rich history. It’s the only hotel in Aspen to have survived since 1889.

Check-in was quick and all the staff was so friendly and attentive. Someone from the front desk helped us with our luggage and showed us to our room. We were booked in a Junior Suite Double, the room was tastefully decorated with local artwork and chic mountainside vibe. The beds were spacious and comfortable with luxe Hermes soap amenities.

For the little guests at the Jerome, they were having a promotion at the time with complimentary meals at Prospect, J-Bar and in-room dining. This was great since dining in Aspen can be pretty pricey. Most entrees and cocktails at the restaurants in town start at $20. I’ve never been that much of an in-room dining person but it is SO helpful with young kids. Dining at sit-down restaurants can get complicated with the little ones so this option being free (charge for service/delivery) made me so happy.
The Jerome didn’t have a kids club but they did have a small game room on the second floor. The game room was cozy with plenty of seating, a few games, toys and equipped with two tv’s. It was the perfect place to meet with our friends who were also traveling with young children.

During the days, we hung out by the pool which was heated and sandwiched by two hot tubs. Both times we were there we encountered light scattered rain. Cocktails by the pool were pricey, $23 plus gratuity and tax, coming out to roughly $30 a drink.
Relax with drinks by the pool. We got caught in the rain, but luckily was able to easily rush back into the hotel

Tip: Try to buy some bottles of wine from the store to enjoy in the room to save on the cost of drinks.

We didn’t rent a car in Aspen and we didn’t really need one. Aspen is so family-friendly in that a lot is walking distance from the Hotel Jerome or any other hotel in downtown Aspen, except for destinations like Maroon Bells and Snowmass. Hotel Jerome offers a private car service but it costs $100 each way, which didn’t seem to make much sense for us economically. By not having a car, we did also save on parking charges from the hotel.
There’s so much for everyone to do in Aspen year round. Aspen offers lots of scenic walks, adventure for thrill seekers, relaxation and other fun activities for the family. Aspen is a very family-friendly place to bring kids of all ages as well as your four-legged friends.
