St. Lucia Family Friendly Excursions

St. Lucia Family Friendly Excursions

The best part of our family trip to St. Lucia was definitely the excursions. If you do book a vacation to St. Lucia, be sure to get out of your resort and explore the beautiful island. One of my favorite things to do on any trip to the Caribbean, is to take some sort of boat trip and see the island from the ocean.
Since we were traveling with four children under six years old (two families of four), we decided to do private trips so we could have more flexibility with the schedule and timing of things in case someone had a meltdown. Since we couldn’t decide between a private catamaran and a private speedboat, we went with both.

We booked the private catamaran through our resort, Windjammer Landing’s excursions desk for a half day.We were picked up at the dock by the Windjammer Landing resort and sailed South to Marigot Bay. On the way there we were also able to pass by the Tunnel of Love, known for locals to frequent the location to jump off the tunnel if given a small donation.

Since we were on a catamaran and on a half day tour, we didn’t have time to go too far. We did only one stop at Anse Cochon Beach for some beach time. We didn’t have any wildlife sightings but really enjoyed just relaxing on the nets.

The catamaran and sailing around Marigot Bay made for great family photo opportunities. Anse Cochon Beach was a relaxing stop during the catamaran tour for beach time and very family-friendly-1

The catamaran was overall relaxing and included lunch and alcoholic/nonalcoholic beverages. The captain and staff of four were friendly and helpful but didn’t offer much information or insight into the island and focused more on letting our group relax. At the time, this cost around $1500 USD for a half day private catamaran trip.
Our other half day excursion was on a private speedboat which we booked through a guy named Randy. Randy and his competitors hang out at the beach at the Windjammer Landing asking travelers if they are looking to book excursions. Booking through Randy provided lower pricing and more flexibility. Pickup for the excursion was also convenient at the dock at the Windjammer Landing. We were met with one guide and the boat captain who operated for Julian Boat Tours. At the time, this half day excursion cost around $750 USD and also included alcoholic/nonalcoholic beverages.

Since almost all private boat excursions are customizable, save some time and use my sample kid-friendly itinerary for your St. Lucia family boat adventure.
Private Speedboat Excursion Itinerary for families:
  1. The first landmark we visited was the Tunnel of Love. Since we were in a smaller vessel, we were able to go through the tunnel which was pretty neat.
  2. Next, we sailed to the Bat Cave, located in Soufriere.  I loved this, it was so unique and the captain got us as close as he could so we could actually hear and see all the bats that were inside the cave! You would never expect to see so many bats in such a narrow crack in the cliffs.  Apparently in the evening there are a ton of bats flying around the area.  Definitely request a visit here if you are on a boat tour.
  3. We then visited Marigot Bay and circled around taking in the quiet scenic landscape of swaying palm trees, anchored boats and peaceful beaches.  There wasn’t too much going on around there but it was nice to pass through and see the sights from the water.
  4. Next, we sailed to Soufriere.  It was here that we docked and were taken by van for 5 minutes to see the Toraille Waterfall.  There was a small entrance fee for the waterfall, $2 for each person over three years old.  The waterfall was easy to access and very kid-friendly.  Since it is a small area, try to go early in the morning to avoid the crowds as it does get busy quickly.
  5. After our little adventure in Soufriere, we were dropped off at Sugar Beach resort’s beachfront for some beach time.  Sugar Beach is a public beach perfectly situated between the two pitons.  The water was calm and there was an area for those to snorkel.  It was nice to get the opportunity to hang out and relax at Sugar Beach, especially since we weren’t hotel guests.  Getting there by boat seemed easier than driving to get there since driving in St. Lucia can get a bit tiring with the traffic and bumpy roads (I get car sick so I wanted to avoid this as much as possible).
  6. After our beach time, we got back on the boat and sped all the way back to our resort in Castries, The Windjammer Landing, listening to music and drinking local Piton Beer.
We docked in Soufriere and were immediately taken into a van to visit the Toraille Waterfall. It was a quick drive there and a very short walk to the actual waterfall (no hiking required)-1

Both trips were so different yet special St. Lucian family excursions for different reasons. The catamaran trip was relaxing and spacious. We visited less sites, had lunch included and we got off the vessel once. The speedboat excursion was also relaxing but very windy. We were allowed off the boat to visit a few sites, had more access to landmarks, but it was a lot bumpier, offered less space in comparison to the catamaran and was less expensive. Whichever you choose, or not—and do both, you can’t go wrong. These excursions were the highlights of our family trip to St. Lucia.
Seeing the Pitons in St. Lucia is a must. The Pitons is easily the most famous landmark in St. Lucia. If you want a less crowded family friendly beach, be sure to stay at or try Sugar Beach-1

Note: One downside to the speedboat was the lack of restroom for the kids. Just keep this in mind if you are traveling with any kiddos that happen to be potty training still. A catamaran may be the better option if you are worried about the lack of restroom and want something more relaxing. At the same time, almost every stop we made did have restrooms.
Cheers to the best family excursions in St. Lucia! There was no shortage of Pitons, sun, tan lines, smiles and St. Lucia views. Windjammer Landing views from the ocean on our way back from our family day trip were so beautiful with its’ hilltop accommodations-1
