Here’s everything you need to know to plan a memorable, stress-free family adventure, plus a few tips we learned firsthand traveling with kids.
Why We Chose Cinque Terre
Our private guide really helped us see so much of Cinque Terre in a day, it was so efficient as she knew the best routes to take us to Manarola, Vernazza and Monterosso.
How Long Does It Take to Get to Cinque Terre from La Spezia?
Quick Tip: Trains can be busy in summer, so allow extra time if you’re planning to explore independently.
Is Cinque Terre Stroller-Friendly?
Short answer: Not really.
Cinque Terre’s villages are filled with stairs, uneven stone walkways, and narrow lanes. A stroller quickly becomes more hassle than help. If you must bring one, make sure to bring a lightweight, compact travel stroller.
Parent Tip: Bring a comfortable baby carrier if you’re traveling with a baby or toddler. We managed just fine without a stroller and were grateful for the freedom to move easily between trains and village paths.
What We Loved About Cinque Terre with Kids
Even with all the stairs and walking, Cinque Terre was 100% worth the effort.
Some highlights:
- Manarola and Monterosso al Mare were our favorite stops. Manarola has picturesque colorful buildings by the sea perfect for photos, while Monterosso offers a sandy beach where kids can play.
- Gelato everywhere. We stopped more times than I can count (and would happily do it again).
- Several villages like Manarola and Monterosso al Mare, have playgrounds tucked between colorful buildings, so the kids could burn off energy with the most beautiful backdrop.
- Ferry rides between villages gave us fantastic views of the cliffs from the water—a fun break from walking.
Other Options Near La Spezia
If Cinque Terre doesn’t feel like the right fit for your family, there are other memorable day trips you can consider:
- Cinque Terre: About 30–45 minutes each way from La Spezia port, depending on the village you visit first. The combination of colorful villages and coastal views makes this one of the most popular shore excursions for families.
- Florence: Approximately 2 to 2.5 hours each way by bus or train. Florence is rich in Renaissance art, architecture, and gelato spots, but be prepared for a long day if you’re traveling with younger kids.
- Pisa: Roughly 1 hour each way by bus or train, making it a convenient half-day option if you want to see the Leaning Tower and explore the Piazza dei Miracoli.
Parent Tip: No matter which destination you choose, allow extra buffer time to return to the ship. Italy’s trains can be delayed, and it’s better to arrive early than risk missing all-aboard time.
What to Pack for a Family Day in Cinque Terre
- Baby carrier: Leave the stroller behind if you can.
- Comfortable walking shoes: There are lots of hills and cobblestones.
- Sunscreen, mini fans and hats: Shade can be scarce in the villages.
- Reusable water bottles: Especially in warmer months.
- Euros: Many shops and cafés prefer cash.
- Swimsuits and towels: If you plan to visit the beach in Monterosso.
Make sure to check out the restaurants in Cinque Terre. We ate at Il Sorriso in Vernazza and really enjoyed the seafood. The fish was amazing.
