Let’s be honest about something upfront: Jackson Hole is expensive. The location, the national parks, the world-class skiing, and the limited number of flights in and out all contribute to a price tag that can genuinely shock families planning their first visit.
But expensive doesn’t mean unmanageable. We took our family of four β two adults and two young daughters β to Jackson Hole in April and came home having spent significantly less than we expected.
Everything else on this list matters. But nothing impacts your Jackson Hole budget more than when you go. April is shoulder season. Ski season is winding down, summer hasn’t started, and the valley sits in a quiet window that most families don’t know about.
This is one of the most meaningful family budget wins at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and it’s not widely known. Children 4 and under ski free. Their lift ticket is complimentary. And because the tram is included with a lift ticket, they also ride the Jackson Hole Aerial Tram to the summit for free. For families with young children, this is a genuinely significant saving.
This was one of our most effective budget strategies and it applies regardless of what time of year you visit.
We stayed at Hotel Terra in Teton Village in a one-bedroom suite with a full kitchen. Before we did anything else on arrival day, we drove to Albertsons in Jackson and stocked up on groceries.
The math is straightforward: a family of four eating every meal at Jackson Hole restaurants will spend at least $150-250 per day on food alone. Cooking breakfast and a couple of dinners per week cuts that in half. In a destination where restaurant bills add up faster than anywhere we’ve been, having a kitchen is a budget strategy.
If your family visits national parks even occasionally, this pass pays for itself quickly. The America the Beautiful Annual Pass costs $80 for U.S. residents and covers entrance to all national parks and federal recreation sites for one year.
At Grand Teton National Park, driving your own vehicle costs $35 per vehicle for a 7-day pass. If you visit the park multiple times during your trip β which most families do β the annual pass saves money and eliminates the need to pay at every entrance. It also covers your entrance when on a commercial wildlife tour: bring it on safari day and hand it to your guide before the booth. Adults pay $20 per person on a commercial tour, children 15 and under are always free.
For families already planning other national park trips within the year, this pass is one of the easiest budget wins available.
We paid approximately $1,250 for a private full-day wildlife safari for our family of four. That is not a small number. But it is the experience that produced the most value of anything we did on the trip.
The budget insight here is not to skip the safari β it’s to use it strategically. A single full-day safari with a knowledgeable guide showed us more of Grand Teton National Park than we could have discovered in days of driving around on our own. It eliminated the inefficiency of figuring out where to go, when to be there, and what you’re looking at.
If budget is genuinely tight, the half-day tour option is a meaningful compromise and still delivers far more than a self-guided day in the park. Three-hour tours are also available.
Some of the most memorable moments of our entire trip cost nothing at all.
Grand Teton National ParkΒ β $35 for a 7-day vehicle pass covering your whole family for unlimited park visits. The scenery, the wildlife, the overlooks, the river walks β all of it is included. This is genuinely one of the greatest values in American travel.
Phil Baux ParkΒ β Free playground right next to Snow King Resort. Our kids loved it and we discovered it by accident on day one. It became a regular stop.
R ParkΒ β Free nonprofit park in Teton Village with ponds, art installations, sculptures, and open space for kids to run. Zero cost, genuinely enjoyable.
Town SquareΒ β Walking the square, seeing the antler arches, shopping the stores, getting a coffee from Cowboy Coffee.
Junior Ranger ProgramΒ β Free at the Craig Thomas Discovery & Visitor Center. Your child completes an activity booklet and earns an official badge. Our kids were completely absorbed by it and it made the visitor center stop one of the highlights of a park day.
Teton Park Road biking in AprilΒ β In early April, park roads are still closed to vehicles but open to bikes and walkers. A paved road through one of the most beautiful landscapes in America with no cars. Free, completely unique to shoulder season, and genuinely spectacular.
Restaurant options inside Grand Teton National Park are limited and expensive. Pack your own lunch, snacks, and drinks every single day you plan to spend in the park.
We used a soft-sided cooler bag loaded with food from Albertsons every morning. It saved us from overpriced park dining, kept the kids from melting down mid-drive and meant we could eat at scenic spots instead of crowded lodge cafes.
This is the simplest budget move on this entire list and also one of the most effective.
Some families ship skis in advance or travel with their own gear to save on rentals. For a family trip this usually isn’t worth the logistics. Ski rental at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is convenient, the equipment is well-maintained, and picking up rentals the afternoon before your first ski day streamlines your morning significantly.
Children’s equipment rentals are available at JH Sports. Allow one hour for the rental process.Β Β Pick up the afternoon before to skip the morning rush on ski day.
Jackson Hole Mountain Resort runs end-of-season deals, anniversary promotions, and occasional lift ticket specials that can dramatically reduce costs. We took advantage of a $60 lift ticket day during the resort’s 60th anniversary. Deals like this surface regularly β follow the resort’s website and social media accounts and check their promotions page before booking your trip.
The resort also offers a Golden Ticket promotion during select dates, allowing holders of any ski resort season pass from anywhere in the world to access Jackson Hole lift tickets at a significant discount. If your family has season passes at another resort, check whether this applies to your travel dates.
Jackson Hole will never be cheap. The airport is small, the location is remote, and the demand is high. Some costs β flights, accommodation, lift tickets β are simply what they are. But the experience is also genuinely extraordinary. Utilize these simple tips to enjoy one of the most remarkable places your family will ever visit β without the financial hangover.
