Once you get through the first small section of the Tunnel Mountain hike, you will cross a small street to continue onto the rest of the hike, which is also where the upper parking lot is located. From there you can already see some views of the city.

It’s worth noting that we hiked from Banff town, which added to the difficulty. The walk through residential streets and past two parking lots was more tiring than anticipated, especially for the kids. Starting directly from the upper parking lot will make the experience much more manageable and enjoyable for your family.
The Hike: What to Expect on the Trail
Tunnel Mountain is often described as a family-friendly hike, but it’s important to set the right expectations, especially when hiking with young children. The trail is 4.3 kilometers (2.7 miles) round trip, with an elevation gain of approximately 300 meters (984 feet). While the distance may seem manageable, the trail itself has a pretty constant incline, with very few sections that level off. This means that it’s not stroller-friendly, and there are a lot of switchbacks to navigate.
For those who don’t regularly hike, this trail can be more challenging than expected. We were initially told that the hike would take around 45 minutes, but with young children in tow, it took much longer. We found ourselves taking frequent breaks as the girls got tired often. If you’re hiking with kids, it’s important to allow extra time and to be prepared for a slower pace. Bring plenty of water, snacks, and be ready to encourage your little hikers along the way.
