If you’re planning a Mediterranean cruise, chances are you’ll find Marseille on your itinerary. This bustling port city in southern France is a fantastic base for exploring the beautiful region of Provence. When our Princess Cruise docked in Marseille, we knew we wanted to experience more than just the city itself. So, we booked a family-friendly Provence tour through the cruise line that took us to the charming villages of Lourmarin and Roussillon, followed by a stop at the famous Lavender Museum.

Here’s a look at how we spent an unforgettable day exploring Provence with kids.

Why Book a Shore Excursion from Marseille?
When you’re cruising with children, convenience matters. Booking a Marseille shore excursion through Princess Cruises made everything seamless—transportation, timing, and expert guides were all taken care of. Instead of figuring out trains, buses, and directions, we were able to sit back and enjoy the ride through Provence’s stunning countryside.

Tip: If you’re traveling during summer, excursions can fill quickly. Reserve your spot in advance to avoid disappointment.

Lourmarin: Storybook Charm in the Luberon
Our first stop was Lourmarin, a picture-perfect village often listed among the most beautiful villages in France. The narrow cobblestone streets are lined with stone houses, inviting cafés, and boutiques selling local crafts and Provençal specialties.
The kids loved exploring the little alleyways and peeking into shops filled with colorful ceramics and lavender products. It’s the kind of place where you feel like time slows down.

Parent Tip: Many small shops prefer cash, so carry a few euros for souvenirs or a snack.

Roussillon: The Ochre Village
After Lourmarin, we continued to Roussillon. Known as the Ochre Village, Roussillon is famous for its striking red and orange buildings. The natural pigments once mined here give the town its warm glow, making it a beautiful backdrop for family photos. Roussillon’s streets are hilly, so be prepared with sturdy shoes and water bottles.

Tip for Families: Even outside of peak summer, Provence can be warm and sunny. Pack sunscreen and hats to keep everyone comfortable. Check out the lovely cafes and restaurants.

Coustellet: Lavender Museum and Local Treasures
No Provence day trip from Marseille would be complete without lavender. In Coustellet, we visited the Musée de la Lavande, where we learned about the history and cultivation of this iconic plant.
The short guided tour explained how lavender is distilled into essential oils, soaps, and balms. Our kids were fascinated to see the old copper stills and vintage tools. Of course, the tour ends in the gift shop—perfect for picking up lavender sachets, soaps, and the lavender gel remedies we ended up bringing home.

Parent Tip: If anyone in your family is sensitive to strong scents, the gift shop can be overwhelming. A quick peek is usually plenty!

When Do Lavender Fields Bloom in Provence?
If your dream is to see endless fields of purple blooms, timing matters. Lavender fields in Provence typically bloom from mid-June to mid-July. Outside of these weeks, you’ll still see gorgeous landscapes dotted with olive groves and vineyards, but the lavender harvest will be over. We went at the beginning of June so we saw a lavender field but it wasn’t in full bloom.

Manage expectations: Even without the famous purple fields, the views are still beautiful, and the villages are just as charming.

Exploring Provence from Marseille was one of the highlights of our Princess Cruise. From the colorful streets of Roussillon to the lavender-scented shops of Coustellet, this shore excursion was a perfect balance of culture, scenery, and family-friendly experiences.
If you’re planning things to do in Marseille on a cruise, consider taking a day trip to Provence. It’s a wonderful way to show your kids the beauty and history of southern France, without the stress of planning every detail yourself.
