If you have a layover that’s over 10 hours, I suggest looking into hotel accommodations to allow the family to comfortably shower and rest.
Hamad International Airport only has one on-site hotel open to public bookings: the Oryx Airport Hotel, which is what I would have chosen if it weren’t for its high price. It’s conveniently located inside the transit area at the South Plaza, right next to the famous Lamp Bear display. There’s also an Oryx Garden Hotel located in Concourse C, but it’s currently used exclusively by Qatar Airways.
Qatar Airways does offer complimentary transit accommodations for passengers with long layovers in Doha. However, you must submit an online request in advance and meet the airline’s eligibility requirements. Not all fare types qualify. If you are eligible, the package includes a complimentary hotel room for your layover duration, airport transfers if needed, and a temporary entry visa to Doha. (Always check the Qatar Airways website for the latest requirements and details.)
We were pleasantly surprised by how nice the accommodations were at the Hyatt Regency Oryx during our overnight layover in Doha. Also, don’t forget to pack an overnight bag with essentials, as you won’t have access to your checked luggage if you're connecting through to your next flight.
On our return from the Maldives, we had a 10 hour layover which is why we chose to stay at the Hyatt Regency Oryx Hotel—an offsite property about 10 minutes from Hamad International Airport. It offered a much more affordable rate—about one-third of the cost of the Oryx Airport Hotel—and allowed us to shower and sleep comfortably before our next flight. After clearing immigration, we followed the signs to the ‘Hotel Buses’ area. Hyatt’s complimentary shuttle picks up every hour on the hour and drops off at the airport every hour at half past. I recommend contacting the hotel directly for the latest shuttle schedule, but we found the process to be smooth and convenient for our family.
The only downside was that staying offsite required going through immigration and added some time to the layover logistics. Still, for the comfort and price, we found it well worth it.
If you’re not looking to leave the airport, Sleep ’n Fly is another great option. Located in both the North and South Plazas of the transit area, this hotel offers pay-by-the-hour rooms with flexible check-in and check-out. It’s a convenient alternative if you just want a nap, a shower, or a quiet break. This option would probably be best for smaller families, solo or couple travelers. Learn more at www.sleep-n-fly.com.
Whether you stay inside the airport or venture out, having a plan for long layovers can make a world of difference when traveling with kids.
Staying nearby allows you to rest, recharge, and avoid the stress of spending hours in the terminal.
